Monday August 4th: A Day at the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership

On Monday August 4th we will spend the day on Hurricane Island where we will have the opportunity to interact with Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership staff, tour the Field Research Station, hear from marine ecologists addressing relevant climate research, and meet educators and students conducting science-based inquiry on the island. We will be served lunch and the day will end with a cocktail party. (A more detailed agenda is below.)

LOGISTICS: Transportation to/from Rockland/Hurricane Island

We have arranged for multiple transportation options to Hurricane Island. Please read the transportation options carefully and select the correct registration option below. This is important for coordinating transportation to and from Hurricane.

PRIVATE VESSEL: For those of you coming in your own vessel or a friend's vessel, there are a limited number of moorings at Hurricane Island (44◦ 2.2N 68◦ 53.1W, see CCA Cruising Guide). These may or may not be comfortable overnight, depending on the weather. Anchoring near Hurricane is not optimal due to hard granite bottom conditions. Anchoring in nearby Long Cove (cove entrance at 44◦ 5.1N 68◦ 53.1W) is an alternative. For vessels at anchor in Long Cove, we will arrange to send a launch boat from Hurricane to do a pick at 1030. (Additional communications on this expected as we approach the event date.) The charge for this option is $35 / pp and covers lunch and the cocktail party.

HURRICANE ISLAND VESSEL: For those of you not out cruising or without access to your own vessel to get to Hurricane, we have arranged for Hurricane to transport you from Rockland to Hurricane Island and back. Participants choosing this transportation option should gather at the Hurricane Island office at 19 Commercial Street (Journey's End Marina) at 0930. There is ample public parking within walking distance of the Hurricane Island office. This option is limited to the first 42 to sign-up, so act fast! The charge for this option is $45 / pp and covers transportation from/to Rockland, lunch and the cocktail party.

ROCKLAND FERRY: For those of you who are on Vinalhaven or wish to take the ferry from Rockland to Carvers Harbor on Vinalhaven, we will arrange to pick you up and return you to the Vinalhaven ferry terminal in Carvers Harbor. We recommend taking the 0845 ferry from Rockland. Unfortunately, the last ferry of the afternoon back to Rockland leaves Vinalhaven at 1630 and you will miss the cocktail party on Hurricane. (See Ferry schedule here. Note that your cost of registration does not include ferry tickets - $40.50 round-trip.The charge for this option is $25 / pp and covers transportation from/to the ferry dock in Carvers Harbor and lunch.

Members who are bringing their own vessels out for the day, not planning on proceeding to Swans and who are willing to provide transport to others, should let me know (howard@maine.rr.com). I will do my best to link people up. For participants who hitch a ride with others, please choose the top registration option below.
