Brin FordNew York, N.Y., USA (February 11, 2013) – The Cruising Club of America (CCA) has selected Brin R. Ford (New Haven, Conn.) to receive its 2012 Richard S. Nye Trophy for his contributions to the Club in the form of meritorious service. The trophy will be awarded by Commodore Daniel P. Dyer, III at the annual Awards Dinner on March 1, 2013 at New York Yacht Club in Manhattan.

Ford is a 1964 graduate of Harvard University and in 1970 received his Masters in Architecture from Yale University. Sailing, cruising and racing has been an integral part of his life since he was young. He has competed in the Newport Bermuda Race 18 times, mostly as navigator. For the past 18 years, Ford has brought distinction to the CCA with commendable service on the Newport Bermuda Race Committee through his programming skills, the creation of online race registration, and race scoring.

About the Cruising Club of America

The Cruising Club of America is dedicated to offshore cruising, voyaging and the “adventurous use of the sea” through efforts to improve seamanship, the design of seaworthy yachts, safe yachting procedures and environmental awareness. Now in its 90th year, the club has 11 stations throughout the U.S., Canada and Bermuda, with approximately 1200 members who are qualified by their experience in offshore passage making. In even-numbered years, the CCA organizes the Newport to Bermuda Race in conjunction with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. Through the club's Bonnell Cove Foundation, grants are made to 501 C3 organizations for safety at sea and environment of the sea projects.

The Richard S. Nye Trophy

The Richard S. Nye trophy is a CCA member lifetime achievement award for meritorious service and seamanship in long-distance cruising.

The trophy is a perpetual trophy in honor of Richard S. Nye, Commodore of the Cruising Club of America 1974-1975, Vice Commodore 1972-1973, and Treasurer 1959-1970. The trophy is to be awarded at the discretion of the Governing Board of the Cruising Club of America to a member who has brought distinction to the Club by meritorious service, outstanding seamanship, outstanding performance in long distance cruising or racing, statesmanship in the affairs of international yachting, or any combination of the above. The award may be as often as annually but need not be made each year.

This trophy is donated by the many crew members who have enjoyed the privilege of sailing aboard Richard S. Nye’s various yachts named Carina. A record of their names shall be maintained with the deed of gift in the archives of the Cruising Club of America.

If in any year, the Governing Board determines it to be in the best interest of the Club, and consistent with the philosophy of yachting as exemplified by Richard S. Nye’s outstanding record in this field, it may by unanimous vote at a duly called meeting of the Board, amend, alter, or rescind any of the terms of this dedication without notice or consent of the donors of the trophy.
